Climbing out of an art style crisis – Part 3

I produce the most when I’m in a bored state. And this week, that state occurred while I was sitting through loooooonnnnnnggggg company meetings on Monday. I activated the pencil and papers I brought with me and sketched a few drawings with what I like (visual library in part 2) in mind.

I was surprised at how much I liked the initial sketches, and got compliments from my colleagues close by, who squealed “so cute!!!” quietly. One unexpected interaction from this was an older colleague seeing these sketches and asking me “Could you draw Hatsune Miku?”. I was surprised! I didn’t expect anyone in my office to know about Miku, and I never outrightly expressed my love for the character at work. Though if you’ve seen my toy blogs you would know I have a decent collection of Miku figures. I gleefully replied “Yes I can!”. See, art can bring people together! ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ – ˵ ) ✧

That night, we had an art stream scheduled. We had hit a huge milestone on  Youtube (1,000 subscribers!) So I wanted to create a celebratory art piece and get started on some emotes.

Since my colleague requested Hatsune Miku, I thought she might be fun to draw too! After all, this style was still in  its initial stages. More refinement is to be expected.

Fast forward to the evening. Stream went swimmingly, with huge raids that were sustained for a noticeable time! I was so happy. We completed these during the stream:

Emotes aside (of which I didnt intend to change the style of, since they are meant to be more generic), I think we managed to achieve a relatively consistent eye shape and head shape for the two pieces we did! But the hours on stream wasn’t enough, I really wanted to draw more… so I stayed up after stream sketching feverishly, until I finished a sketchbook of 20 pages in 2 hours.

I decided to put up the drawings on my wardrobe as a way to see all the pieces I did during this time, and to inspire me to complete them later in the week. I took my white wardrobe door as if it was an art studio’s  partition. Seeing the sketches all up reminded me of my life in art school, when we would tape or tack our references and pieces everywhere.

I posted a thread with all the sketches on Twitter, so you can check them out there if you’d like! My goal with these drawings is to experiment with traditional medium to see what I enjoy working with, and what effect best suits my preferences and the overall aesthetic of this style. I haven’t dubbed the style yet, but if you have any name suggestions let me know!

I’m so excited to continue this journey. Unbeknownst to me, I was about to catch the worse flu I’ve ever had, which was going to render me unable to do what I love for a couple days ;_;

Til the next update, sick Hime
