Boodunnit is a short free-to-play adventure-sandbox game where you play as the ghost of Julia Lawson, a recently deceased and well-loved florist and prankster! In the small town of Boonkle, you meet the quirky cast of characters who are (mostly) clueless about what could have possibly happened to you. I faced a few issues with the game, but would recommend it just to try out and experience the charming characters and bittersweet story.
I adore the cute 3D graphics and chill music, but as mentioned by many other reviews, the controls can be janky.
Only after I cleared the game for the first time did I realise the last 2 achievements are impossible to get out of the box! That said, jcfarsight created a manual patch to make them achievable. I highly recommend patching the game before your first playthrough to avoid needing to going through the whole thing a 2nd time. (The 2nd playthrough took me less than 10 minutes though, once I knew where everything was.)
Three abilities are introduced upon starting the game, requiring you to levitate objects, dash through fences and gates, and possess living beings to clear the tutorial. Use your newfound abilities to scour the maps in search of clues!
Spoiler-free tips for controls:
– Use jumping to arrange levitated items more easily
– Dashing sometimes does not work. Reverse, slam yourself into the fence and try again repeatedly until it does.
– You don’t need to hold Q for the special abilities while possessing, just hit it once to turn ON and once to turn OFF
– You need to position yourself quite close or even touching the NPCs to talk to them
– If you get stuck, exit to main menu and reload
The gameplay can be kind of unclear. I chanced upon the first 3 clues while exploring the town map, but the last clues were hidden away in really unexpected places, which I used a guide for. There isn’t really anybody in the game that I encountered to point you in the direction of those. If you don’t mind me giving you a hint, I’d say to revisit the places you thought you were finished with.
I found it a bit strange that out of all the clues you have to gather, only 1 is pertinent to the actual mystery. The rest of the clues were just to unlock additional dialogue options, which was fun, but did not really serve the Eureka moment I hoped for. But the fun dialogue along the way made it worth the struggle for me.
